Pets are not therapy

The human-animal bond is being repackaged as a mental health solution. This infantilises public discourse around genuine connection.

Pets are not therapy
FO Take · Score 20

Emotional support animals are a crutch. We are outsourcing our need for genuine connection to creatures incapable of complex reciprocity. This trend signifies a societal retreat from the messy, challenging, yet ultimately rewarding work of human relationships. Are we so broken that a wagging tail is preferable to confronting our fears of intimacy with our fellow man?

The strongest counter

Pets offer unconditional love and a palpable sense of presence, which can significantly alleviate feelings of loneliness and anxiety. For many, this bond provides a vital, accessible form of comfort without the complexities of human interaction.
