rPPG for wellness is a fool’s errand
Remote PPG offers new ways of measuring health and performance but its dependency on uncompressed video is a fatal flaw for scaled use cases
The promise of ambient health monitoring is a sham. Until rPPG can function flawlessly on compressed video, its application remains relegated to niche, controlled environments. The notion of unobtrusive, continuous health monitoring at scale is a fantasy. We must stop overselling technology that cannot meet the demands of real-world deployment. Is this another case of tech solutionism gone wild, with actual utility taking a back seat to speculative hype?
rPPG will improve. Its current limitations are mere technical hurdles. Continued research will overcome the compression issue, leading to widespread adoption in telemedicine, driver safety, and beyond.
