AI Teaching Assistants: Trust is Dead, Long Live Compliance
Students will tolerate AI in education if it is fair, but true trust is a fantasy. Compliance, not conviction, will rule.

The notion that students "trust" AI teaching assistants is a dangerous illusion. Our educational system, already compromised by credentialism, now chases synthetic trust in algorithms. Students don't need to believe in the AI's benevolent spirit; they need it to function effectively and equitably. This isn't about fostering belief, but enforcing utility. The pursuit of "trust" merely delays the inevitable: AI in education will be a matter of cold, hard compliance. What happens when the AI gets it wrong?
Building student trust in AI is paramount for adoption and deeper engagement. Without it, AI becomes another barrier, not a bridge, to learning. We must cultivate a sense of partnership.
