Music Education Still Fails Girls
Traditional music programmes reinforce gender stereotypes, limiting girls’ instrumental choices and leadership roles from an early age.
For decades, music education has subtly steered girls away from instruments deemed ‘masculine’ and leadership positions. This isn’t just about violins versus drums; it’s about systemic bias stifling potential. We are failing to cultivate female conductors and composers by narrowing their perceived roles early on. When will we dismantle these archaic structures that dictate who gets to lead the orchestra?
This overstates the issue. Individual preferences, not systemic bias, largely determine instrument choice. Girls often gravitate to certain instruments naturally, and perceived roles evolve with age and interest.
