Academia Needs Practitioners, Not Monks

Academia remains infatuated with research pedigree while frontline operators offer the practical instruction students actually require.

Academia Needs Practitioners, Not Monks
FO Take · Score 78

Higher education remains obsessed with tenure-track theorists who have never operated in the wild. Career practitioners bring battlefield pragmatism into lecture halls, proving that technical education must be taught by those who have lived the stakes. Traditional faculties still treat industry veterans as auxiliary novelties rather than the gold standard. Until universities dismantle the citation-obsessed hiring cartel, students will graduate over-credentialled and under-skilled. Who would you rather learn crisis leadership from: a sociologist or a state trooper?

The strongest counter

Conventional research faculties ensure deep intellectual rigor and foundational knowledge. Replacing established academic scholarship with non-traditional vocational trajectories risks degrading theoretical mastery and long-term academic excellence across technical disciplines.

Audit trail
  • ·Professors of practice root curricula in frontline experience, not theory.
  • ·Higher education still favours citation volume over real-world competence.
  • ·Career changers bridge academia and vocational reality far faster.
