Men’s book clubs: A band-aid for broken communities

Regional men find solace in reading clubs as public spaces vanish. A temporary fix, not a systemic solution.

Men’s book clubs: A band-aid for broken communities
FO Take · Score 75

Australia’s men are finding connection in book clubs because society offers them little else. This isn't a heartwarming tale of male bonding, but a damning indictment of disappearing public spaces and the emasculation of community spirit. We've replaced authentic gathering with organised self-help. Reading alone won't rebuild a broken social fabric. Why are we celebrating symptom management, not demanding genuine civic restoration?

The strongest counter

Book clubs foster literacy and mental well-being, offering a vital lifeline in isolated areas. It's a proactive, community-led answer to social fragmentation, providing a safe space for expression.
