Peru’s Presidential Meetings Miss Learning’s Real Challenge
High-level talks ignore the urgent need for a radical overhaul in Peruvian education, focusing instead on political theatre.

Another week, another photo opportunity for Peru’s political elite. While the President huddles with ministers, the nation’s learning crisis deepens. These "working meetings" are a distraction, a performance designed to project an image of action without delivering any. Real change requires dismantling the outdated structures that cripple education, not polite conversation in a palace. Bureaucracy and vested interests continue to suffocate innovation. Until they tackle systemic corruption and inequity head-on, Peru’s students remain abandoned.
Presidential meetings, even symbolic ones, can signal intent and coordinate policy. Engaging top ministers ensures a unified government approach to educational reform, however incremental. Diplomacy also plays a role in securing international learning partnerships.
