Bots won't mend student loneliness

Conversational UIs are a weak salve for the deep isolation international students face. Connection requires more than algorithms.

Bots won't mend student loneliness
FO Take · Score 15

International students need genuine, deeply integrated support systems, not chatbot platitudes. University life is already isolating, and relying on AI for connection is a cynical dodge. We are creating a generation fluent in superficial digital chatter but starved of true human bonds. Are universities truly prioritising student well-being, or just deploying cheap tech fixes?

The strongest counter

While not a panacea, CUIs offer accessible, immediate support for international students struggling with adaptation and mental health. They can bridge initial communication gaps and provide a safe space for those reluctant to seek human help.
