Stop Forcing Junior Engineers to Memorise Obsolete Git Commands
The developer obsession with CLI syntax is lingering ritualism. AI handles version control; engineers should focus on architecture.

Teaching newcomers twenty Git incantations in 2025 is pedagogical laziness. Generative tools and integrated environments already execute branching, rebasing, and commits from plain context or automated review loops. Treating terminal flags as a rite of passage merely protects artificial engineering gatekeeping. Developers must understand state, history, and distributed consensus, not memorise obscure command syntax that software agents manage faster and with fewer catastrophic detached heads. Why cling to the plumbing?
CLI fluency remains essential when automated tools misfire or corrupt state. Engineers who do not understand underlying Git mechanics cannot debug complex upstream merge failures.
- ·Agentic IDEs now stage, commit, and resolve merge conflicts autonomously.
- ·Rote syntax memorisation offers diminishing returns as developer tooling abstracts plumbing.
- ·Version control fundamentals matter, but the command-line interface is obsolescent.
