Elderly autonomy: a societal illusion

We champion individual agency in later life, yet society dictates the terms of engagement.

Elderly autonomy: a societal illusion
FO Take · Score 35

The mantra of "owning your silver years" is a convenient fiction. Society, not the individual, largely frames the opportunities and limitations of old age. From healthcare access to social infrastructure, systemic structures predetermine much of what a senior can "own." Personal responsibility is moot without genuine societal support. Are we truly empowering the elderly, or merely offloading societal obligations onto them?

The strongest counter

Individual initiative in later life fosters purpose and combats isolation. Relying solely on societal structures diminishes personal resilience and the joy of self-direction. Many thrive by actively shaping their retirement.
