Nature Prescriptions Fail to Cure Loneliness Epidemic
Sending lonely people into nature is a well-meaning but ultimately shallow response to a deep societal wound.
The notion that a dose of nature can fix profound loneliness is patently absurd. This study, like others, misinterprets symptoms for causes. Loneliness is a systemic crisis of disconnection, driven by atomisation and a lack of genuine community infrastructure. We need robust social programmes, not pleasant walks. Prescribing nature is a Band-Aid when reconstructive surgery is required. It avoids addressing the root failures of modern society to foster true belonging.
Nature-based social prescribing provides valuable therapeutic benefits and gentle social interaction, offering a tangible first step towards alleviating isolation for many individuals.
