Graceland’s controversy highlights a persistent delusion: art transcends politics. It does not. Simon’s creative appropriation, however well-intentioned, became a vehicle for personal gain, glossing over systemic oppression. There is no moral neutrality in creation; every artistic act is a political statement. Why pretend otherwise?
The strongest counter
Art’s power lies in its ability to connect disparate worlds. Graceland, by bringing South African rhythms to a global audience, fostered understanding and appreciation, ultimately doing more good than harm. Culture is a bridge, not a weapon.
