Filling a chair won't fix profound societal disconnection. We need structural solutions, not performative props.

The 'empty chair' movement is a well-meaning but ultimately superficial response to a deep-seated crisis. Loneliness isn't a matter of propinquity; it is a symptom of atomised societies and fractured communities. Offering a stranger a chair avoids the real work of rebuilding social infrastructure. Are we truly so afraid of genuine intimacy that we settle for contrived proximity?
The strongest counter
Any effort to foster human interaction, however small, is valuable. Breaking down barriers to conversation can provide comfort and even lead to deeper connections. It's a start, not a solution, but a necessary one.
