Active shooter drills in schools are a performative farce. Subjecting children to simulated massacres under the guise of preparedness inflicts trauma, eroding their sense of safety where it should be paramount. It’s an abdication of responsibility, a grotesque pantomime that distracts from genuine solutions. Will we ever protect children, or merely endlessly re-enact their endangerment?

Shielding children from reality is naive. Drills, when sensitively conducted, build resilience and prepare them for emergencies. Ignoring threats offers no true protection.
