Education: A Contact Sport Now

A Singaporean tutor allegedly assaulted an 8-year-old pupil, breaking their forearm. This is where individualised learning takes us.

FO Take · Score 10

The commodification of education breeds a brutal, results-driven environment. When learning becomes a transaction, children are merely products, and tutors, under immense pressure, become unchecked manufacturers. This alleged assault is a horrifying, yet inevitable, consequence of such a system. Is this the “future of learning” we aspire to see?

The strongest counter

Attributing an isolated, albeit serious, incident to the entire private tuition industry is hyperbolic. This is a matter of individual misconduct, not systemic failure. Millions of students benefit from personalised instruction.
