Financial Literacy: A Band-Aid, Not a Cure

BPI Foundation and ACEN partner to “empower” Filipinos with financial knowledge. This is corporate-speak for avoiding real solutions.

Financial Literacy: A Band-Aid, Not a Cure
FO Take · Score 20

Another corporation offers “financial literacy” to the underserved. This is a distraction. The problem is not a lack of knowledge, but a lack of systemic economic opportunity. Telling people to budget better while they are mired in poverty is insulting. We need structural change, not patronising workshops. Are we truly addressing root causes or just offering palatable platitudes?

The strongest counter

Financial literacy, even if insufficient on its own, provides essential tools for individual empowerment. Every bit of knowledge helps people navigate complex financial landscapes and make informed choices.
