Trophies Will Not Save Vocational Education From Cultural Snobbery

State awards cannot mask the systemic credentialism that still treats vocational education as a secondary pathway.

Trophies Will Not Save Vocational Education From Cultural Snobbery
FO Take · Score 34

Parading award winners does nothing to fix the systemic snobbery choking vocational education. Governments love ceremonial handshakes, yet the broader economy continues to reward generic university credentials over elite technical competency. Until technical and vocational routes command parity of esteem, real funding, and genuine market pay, these accolades remain cheap political theatre. Dignity in trades requires wage premiums, not trophies. Are we training for industry, or just staging public relations?

The strongest counter

Public recognition and state backing elevate vocational dignity, incentivising students towards high-demand, practical careers while steadily eroding historical stigma against manual skills.

Audit trail
