Mother Tongue push a linguistic smokescreen

Singapore’s expanded mother tongue programmes are a shallow political gesture, not genuine linguistic enrichment. It’s a policy for optics, not outcomes.

Mother Tongue push a linguistic smokescreen
FO Take · Score 35

Expanding mother tongue programmes is pure political theatre. It’s a superficial nod to multiculturalism, designed to placate rather than educate. These initiatives rarely foster true bilingualism; they merely offer a veneer of cultural depth. Students need genuine immersion, not tokenistic elective courses. Are we serious about language, or just about headlines?

The strongest counter

Enhanced mother tongue programmes offer vital cultural preservation and cognitive benefits. Increased access allows deeper engagement, fostering identity and improved academic performance.
