DevOps Is a Dead End for Developers

The 2023 Stack Overflow Survey confirms a widening chasm between general developers and specialist DevOps roles. Specialisation stifles true innovation.

DevOps Is a Dead End for Developers
FO Take · Score 20

The DevOps role, once lauded as the future, is an intellectual cul-de-sac. Developers shunting themselves into this niche sacrifice broad skill development for a conveyor-belt existence. True ingenuity flowers from holistic understanding, not from narrow operational silos. Is this not simply industrialisation by another name, stripping agency from the craftsperson?

The strongest counter

DevOps is crucial for modern software delivery. Specialisation ensures efficiency and stability in complex systems. Generalists cannot provide the depth of knowledge required.
