Motherhood Penalty is a Policy Choice
Single mothers need more than charity; they need structural support to achieve true financial resilience. It is not an individual failing.

Paternalistic programmes offering "support" to single mothers are a distraction. The "motherhood penalty" is not an act of nature, but a policy choice. Until we address a system that penalises women for having children, individual “uplift” schemes will remain a band-aid. We need universal childcare and equal pay legislation now. Do we truly value mothers, or just their unpaid labour?
While systemic issues are real, practical support for single mothers provides immediate relief and tangible skills. Focusing solely on policy ignores the urgent, everyday struggles faced by these women, and dismisses the positive impact of community-based aid.
