Pets can’t cure loneliness

Emotional support animals are a stopgap, not a solution to the loneliness epidemic. We need genuine human connection.

Pets can’t cure loneliness
FO Take · Score 20

Hong Kong’s “silver economy” obsession with pets as a loneliness cure exposes a societal fault line. We are outsourcing human connection to animals, masking deeper systemic issues. Pets offer comfort, sure, but a dog cannot replace a robust social fabric or meaningful intergenerational relationships. Stop commodifying companionship and start investing in community. Are we truly so afraid of true human intimacy?

The strongest counter

Pets undeniably offer companionship and routine, boosting mental and physical health in older adults. For many, they provide a vital sense of purpose and belonging, enriching lives where human connection may be limited. This is a net positive.
